Through the lens of witness
Artist Statement:
Under my alias, "The Time Thief," I present "Through the Lens of Witness," a deeply personal exploration of the George Floyd protests in Philadelphia on May 30th, 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. The tragic death of George Floyd, a 46-year-old Black man, at the hands of police in Minneapolis, ignited global demonstrations against police brutality and systemic racism. Inspired by the legendary Gordon Parks, I feel a responsibility to document contemporary experiences through photographic activism, ensuring that future generations can witness these critical moments.
Immersed in the protests, I captured the raw energy and emotions of the participants, translating the intense sights, sounds, and smells into thought-provoking images. These photographs, set against the historic backdrop of Philadelphia's City Hall, highlight the tensions between law enforcement and protesters, raising important questions about justice, equality, and the role of policing in society. This collection underscores the unsettling reality that prioritizing property protection can often perpetuate racial injustice and violence.
"Through the Lens of Witness" integrates the Ubuntu philosophy, emphasizing our interconnectedness and collective responsibility to foster kindness and inclusion. This series invites viewers to delve into the courage and varied experiences of those who marched for justice, capturing the spirit of change and the collective quest for a more equitable society.
