East meets west
Artist Statement:
"East Meets West: A Visual Harmony on Washi" by Steven CW Taylor is a deeply personal exploration of the dual neighborhoods of East and West Germantown. Having been born in East Germantown and now running my Ubuntu Fine Art gallery in West Germantown, this collection aims to celebrate both areas through striking monochrome images. These photographs capture the unique charm and vibrant essence of each neighborhood, highlighting their resilience, beauty, and shared experiences through the lives of their residents.
The images are printed on handmade unryu washi paper from the renowned Awagami Factory in Japan, a family-run business with a history spanning over three centuries. This special paper adds a tactile quality to the images, further enhancing the spirit of the Germantown communities. Inspired by my love for Japanese anime, which harmonizes a deep respect for cultural heritage with modern technology, the use of unryu paper blends ancient and contemporary elements, symbolizing the ongoing cultural dialogue between East and West.
Embracing the Ubuntu philosophy—focusing on mutual dependence, compassion, and the belief that our well-being is interconnected—"East Meets West" honors the resilience, beauty, and diversity of Germantown. This collection invites viewers to immerse themselves in the unique dynamics and shared experiences of these neighborhoods, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation through the perspectives of their inhabitants. By embodying the essence of Ubuntu, this collection aims to cultivate a greater sense of community, understanding, and harmony among those who experience its visual symphony.
