A Space for Presence, in the Hood.
Mission
Ubuntu Fine Art exists to uplift Germantown and its surrounding community through intentional art experiences. Guided by Ubuntu (Shared Humanity), Ikigai (Life’s Purpose), Ishokenmei (Mastery), cultural exchange, and access, the gallery offers a calm space where high‑calibre art and shared humanity converge. Visitors are invited to slow down, reflect, and transform through connection with the artist and with one another.
Guiding Principles
Ubuntu — Shared Humanity
Ubuntu Fine Art stands on the belief that art is a mirror of our shared existence. Each exhibition is shaped by reciprocity, dignity, and care. As a cultural explorer, Steven CW Taylor builds bridges between his global experiences and the Germantown community, creating encounters that affirm our interdependence and collective worth
Ikigai — Purpose
Ikigai is the quiet joy found in living with purpose each day. The reason one rises in the morning and devotes themselves fully to life’s work. For Taylor, Ikigai lives in the act of cultural exploration itself: engaging the world directly, learning from its traditions, and returning home to share what has been gathered. Through this rhythm of discovery and exchange, the gallery becomes both vessel and offering—an expression of purpose in motion.
Ishokenmei — Mastery
The Japanese idea of wholehearted dedication lives in Taylor’s artistic practice. Long exposure photographs in remote landscapes, meticulous editing workflow, and deliberate installation of his work. Mastery here is not measured by scale but by sincerity—every detail, from print to placement, is a moving meditation on attention.
Cultural Exchange
Having explored 19 countries and four U.S. national parks, Taylor integrates lessons from each culture he’s explored. From Maasai elders in Kenya to an orphanage in South Africa, and exchanging these experiences through the gallery. Ubuntu Fine Art becomes a portal where global traditions meet Germantown streets, turning exploration into a dialogue and the gallery into a site of ongoing exchange.
Access & Transformation
The gallery is free and open to the public during open hours. The purpose is transformation through access, inviting reflection, connection, and renewal. The gallery is also available for intentional rentals that align with this spirit, extending Ubuntu’s reach beyond exhibitions into community gatherings and shared experiences.

I held my 35th birthday party here and it was the best. I’ve known Steve for years so to be able to celebrate in his beautiful and black owned space was a no brainer. Steve was accommodating and helpful. I had caterers come set up, a decorator, and it completely turned the space into a place to celebrate and still make it my own. I wanted something unique, “artsy” with great lighting and wanted to support black vendors as much as possible. MANY selfies were taken by my guests who all enjoyed the space and art. Thanks for having this space Steve. I look forward to having my 40th here!

Ubuntu Art Gallery is a true gem in Uptown Philadelphia and a vital space for Black art and culture in the city. I've visited Ubuntu for multiple showcases. I also held my 30th birthday celebration there in 2023, where I was grateful for the warm hospitality of gallery owner and photographer Steven Taylor. Whether you’re looking for an event venue or a space to experience incredible live art, you must visit Ubuntu Art Gallery. I highly recommend it to anyone who values culture, creativity, and community!
